If your garage or shed is like mine, you probably have a plethora of power tools and gardening tools stowed away that you use to do your gardening, cleaning and maintenance.
Most of these power tools (think lawn mowers, leaf blowers, high pressure hoses) are quite expensive to purchase. This means we often spend a lot of money to buy these tools and yet rarely use them, only recovering their cost over the long term.
Similarly, others who need access to these tools would prefer not to buy them. This leads others to hire them from expensive hire shops like Kennards Hire. Hiring may be cheaper than buying, but it also assumes the person will know how to use the tools (which often isn’t the case).
If you are needing some side money, why not consider renting these tools out locally or offering a local service to help others at a cost?
This idea is a great way of making some extra money, while residents in your neighbourhood who would otherwise not want to spend the money purchasing such power tools can get a cheaper alternative for once off requirements.
There are two models you could consider:
- Renting your tools out for others to use themselves
- Offering your own time + tools to do the job for others
Option #2 helps you protect your tools while charging a slightly higher premium to cover your time.
Now all you need is a way to advertise your services.
How to get business hiring out your power tools and services locally
Firstly you could do a good old fashioned letterbox drop in your local area. This helps contain the potential jobs to places nearby. As this is a side job, you probably aren’t wanting a fully fledged business cutting peoples lawns or pressure washing peoples driveways. The letterbox drop helps you contain the area, potentially introduce yourself and give others the comfort of knowing it’s a nice local family offering the services.
Secondly you can expand your horizons further by using Gumtree.com.au. You could post local ads in the areas surrounding you with a nice profile picture, who you are, why you are offering this and the rates at which you would lease our your tools (and/or service charges).
I would suggest posting a range of different ads with specific services (instead of just a generic ad with everything you can offer). This means someone searching for someone to pressure wash their driveway in Area X will be able to locate you easily via a search on Gumtree or Google.
Examples of what people may want and how you can offer them help with your tools
Below are some ideas based on the tools you may have:
- Pressure washer: clean peoples driveways, sandstone and patios.
- Leaf blower: blow and capture all leaves in Autumn across houses in your street
- Lawn mower and edger: mow and edge peoples lawns
- Circular saws and building tools: help people with sawing things to size
For instance, I recently purchased a $600 high pressure hose about 3 months ago. I’ve used it a few times, done the job I needed and will not have to use it for another 12 months. Given it would cost over $150 for a neighbour of yours to hire one from Kennards; you could offer to pressure clean their driveway for a $50 note. It saves them $100, and gives you nearly 10% of the purchase price back in cash.
The funny thing with this example however is that I pressure cleaning is actually fun; sometimes I even think about doing it for others for free due to the sense of satisfaction it creates.
