Searching for coupon codes when shopping online has become somewhat of an Olympic sport; I simply can’t resist a quick coupon search before parting with my money online.
If I can find a coupon code; I feel amazing. If I cannot find a coupon code; I feel frustrated and occasionally rage close my browser tab. Coupon hunting is a cornerstone to saving money, albeit – it can be frustrating and slow.
If you never wish to search for a coupon code again, read on. I will show you how I’ve saved hundreds of dollars using the Honey app browser extension that runs silently in the background of your online shopping.
What is the Honey app (browser extension)?
Honey is a free to use ‘web app’ or ‘extension’ for your browser. Once installed, it will automatically apply discount codes and coupons at the point of checkout when buying things online.
Using Honey, there is quite literally nothing you need to do. It simply applies the biggest bang for buck coupons it can find on the internet to your existing order (automatically); saving you time and money.
How does the Honey App work?
Honey has a repository of discount codes, coupons and specials that get applied to your shopping basket when buying online from select retailers (30,000+ and counting). The Honey extension runs silently in the background of your browser and monitors which website you are shopping at.
While you shop, Honey selects a range of coupons to maximize your discounts; it then applies said discounts once you progress your checkout (and it sees a coupon field). Honey is smart enough to ‘coupon stack’ as well, which means adding multiple coupons where possible to further drive down the final cost to you.
Honey’s sole purpose is to help you save money by reducing the final amount you need to pay and will do so in milliseconds.
Which browsers support the Honey extension?
The Honey browser extension is available across all major web browsers, including; Google Chrome, Safari, Firefox, Opera and Microsoft Edge.
Currently, there is no Honey mobile app, though numerous reports have stated that this is coming (for those who prefer to shop via native iOS or Android apps with major retailers).
Features & Benefits of the Honey App
Honey automatically applies coupon codes.
Quite simply, the moment the Honey App sees a coupon field in the checkout flow – it applies the best possible combination of coupon codes (with no visible delay to you, the shopper).
Using Honey means you will never have to search for discount codes.
Honey has the world’s largest repository of discount codes and coupons. No longer will you need to search for coupon codes or discounts, as Honey will automatically find them and apply them for you.
Honey works on just about every major online retail store imaginable.
Honey works incredibly well across numerous retailers. While Honey won’t work on every website, it does cover a rather large cohort of retailers and is saving shoppers significant money (I saved around $200 recently when buying from ASOS).
Honey makes saving money easy.
All you need to do is install the Honey plugin to save money and time. While the convenience is appreciated, the actual money saving benefit of Honey is what is material; some people have saved hundreds just before they were about to pay.
Honey offers cashback on purchases via ‘Honey Gold’.
Again, without you doing anything – every time you shop with Honey, you earn ‘Honey Gold’ which can be redeemed for gift cards at your favourite online retailers. Honey is able to do this by participating in retailers affiliate programs, whereby the retailer pays affiliates 1-5% of the total amount spent by a customer they refer. Honey then pass this money back to you (or a percentage of it) in the form of Honey Gold.

Honey App review
I’ve been using Honey for the better part of 18 months and am loving it. I opted to install Honey on my work PC, home PC and that of my wife’s PC (which turned out to be a power move, given my wife’s penchant for shopping online compared to my boring frugal ways).
We’ve purchased around $6,000 worth of online goods in the past year (don’t judge, we prefer to buy online as opposed to visiting shopping centres) and the discount courtesy of Honey has been on average 15%.
On a few occasions, we’ve not had any coupons applied, though to make up for it we’ve also had moment whereby our shopping basket was reduced by as much as 40% in one go; a very much welcome saving at the time when we needed it most.
Overall a solid app
I’d give Honey 5/5 stars and strongly suggest you install it right away. Take a few extra moments to install it across every PC or MAC you own (both at home and work); the savings will really start to add up.
