Roads & Martime Services (RMS), the transport arm of the NSW Government, formerly known as the ‘RTA’ offer a 6 month CTP green slip, also known as half year green slip or ‘short term registration’.
In the past you could only purchase a 12 month CTP green slip, this meant that someone who was anticipating selling a car was effectively buying more CTP registration than what they needed for the year ahead, in turn wasting money (or giving a freebie to the new owner) as the CTP green slip price was not refundable.
The 6 month green slip in turn is perfect for those that are unsure of how much longer they will be holding onto their car, light truck or motorbike.
It helps you save money by purchasing a smaller window of time on your CTP green slip – simple.
When does a 6 month CTP green slip make sense?
- If you intend on selling car, light truck or bike within 0-6 months but still need to use it beforehand.
- If you are running a car, light truck or bike that may not function after 6 months (aka a bomb)
- You are intending to not use the car after 6 months for an extended period of time, such as while you work overseas for a year or similar.
What kinds of transport is eligible for 6 month CTP green slips?
- Light trucks
- Trailers (also available for 3 month CTP registrations)
Your car registration should match your CTP green slip duration
What you must keep in mind however, is that the length of time you register your CTP green slip for must match the actual registration (e.g. the car or bikes rego with the RMS/RTA or similar).
This means you cannot register your car for 12 months but only purchase a 6 month CTP green slip.
My example of how I could have saved money using this method
I shudder telling this story. I was in the process of selling my car (it was a year old, still rather expensive in my standards) and unfortunately the registration and CTP green slip was up for renewal at the same time.
I couldn’t find a seller in time before having to renew both. I didn’t realise the 6 month CTP green slip existed and in turn paid the full 12 months – both for registration and for the CTP green slip.
As a result, I overspent around $650 that I didn’t have to. Complete waste of money and something that to this day bugs me to think about.
How to get your 6 month CTP green slip or rego
Simply visit myrta.com and the options will exist. If you are registering your CTP green slip directly with you preferred supplier – ask them to provide you a CTP quote for only 6 months instead of 12.
