Of course, there is no greater financial guarantee in life than hard work, steady saving and sensible financial planning. But sometimes I find myself daydreaming about that elusive Lotto ticket, that wealthy philanthropist friend I never knew I had, that priceless coin collection I found in my backyard while digging up the veggie patch. Unlikely, of course. So I thought I’d do a bit of research and find out some of the less common ways we could make money and supplement our ordinary incomes.
Write A Romance Novel
The Internet has killed some industries and breathed new life into others. With the advent of e-books, some publishers (mass publishers like Harlequin, aka Mills and Boon for example) are actively looking for content to publish for their digital branches. Why not check out what their looking for, and try your hand at this very popular genre? There is a burgeoning need for online content and no job is better suited to work around young kids, a full-time job or university. A lot of publishers are looking for shorter content, as well as novel-length works, so check out what people are asking for and give it a go.
Write Someone’s Biography
Obviously, you have to choose the right person. There isn’t necessarily a lot of money in it, but go online (Gumtree can be a good idea) and check out whether anyone is looking for a biography writer, or a autobiography ghost writer. They’ll usually be able to pay you an initial fee, and offer some royalties from the published effort. There is a reasonable amount of ground work involved, but it can be a rewarding effort and a published book never looks shabby on your resume.
If your neighbourhood is anything like mine, there are tonnes of people around who love their dogs but can’t find enough time to walk them. They’d be perfectly willing to pay someone to take them to the park and exhaust them for an hour. You don’t even need to charge a large amount; if you combine a couple of clients for a lunch hour, you can making a steady, extra source of income and getting fit in the meantime!
Become A Walking Ad
Do you spend most of your time in traffic? There are a couple of ways to make the time work for you. You can call your business colleagues through bluetooth, map out your latest project while you idle and earn money as you drive. That’s right. A great tip from Woman’s Day: register your car at freecarmedia.com and, as soon as they have an advertiser, they’ll paint the car and you can start earning money for basically doing niente.
Some people have a gift for display. I’m sad to say, I’m not one of the blessed but, if I were, I would think seriously about hiring out my skills as a merchandiser. Either do it freelance (where you can be paid around $15- 20 an hour) or as a professional (that’s right, a full-time job of displaying products and rearranging stores). If you want to do it as a part-time option, why not offer reasonably priced package deals to your local stores? Chances are they won’t have the time to make their displays look great, and they’ll find it a very lucrative investment.
