What is the cheapest day for petrol?
Like many people, petrol seems to eat into my monthly earnings the most. In fact, just running a car is a good way to not save money but appears to be an unavoidable cost. This article will look at the cheapest days to buy petrol along with the days in which you should steer clear of any bowser no matter where you are.
Understanding that petrol prices vary greatly between suburb to suburb can greatly help you start to save money on petrol, which is why you need to know that there are certain days of the week when petrol is cheapest and days of which it is inflated due to consumer demand.
So what is the cheapest day for petrol?
Historically, the cheapest day for petrol is actually a Tuesday or Wednesday according to NRMA and MotorMouth – mid week when people are at their busiest and less likely to fill up with petrol.
Buying petrol on a Tuesday or Wednesday will likely result in a saving of between 5-10cents per litre. It has also been shown that depending on your location, the savings can be even greater – ranging upwards of 15cents for city based areas such as the Sydney CBD.
How much money could you save?
Considering that the average petrol tank holds between 30-40 litres, you could save from $6 to $10 every time you fill up. Though this does not sound like much, remember that over the course of a year, it could easily save you over $500 by just buying petrol from a suburban petrol station that is mindful of prices while remembering that you should organise your fill ups on Tuesdays or Wednesdays. Saving Money on Petrol can also be done with smart driving techniques.
Days you should not buy petrol
Petrol prices consistently rise as the weekend draws nearer, so you should avoid Fridays and Saturdays as the need for petrol is increased and the petrol prices reflect this supply and demand by rising.
Holidays and long weekends are also days in which petrol companies and service stations inflate their prices to take advantage of consumer demand – these break periods should be avoided by all means as petrol nears 20-25cents more expensive on the eve of a long weekend when motorists are leaving the city.
Tips on getting the cheapest petrol
I personally use MotorMouth, a fairly new website that allows for consumers to check prices based on post codes. You can view their website by clicking here.
MotorMouth covers the following areas: Sydney, Brisbane, the Sunshine Coast, Gold Coast, Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth and if you register you can get free updates on your selected area via email or paid SMS service. There is also an option to pay for an SMS service which will let you get the information directly to your phone, but I would suggest saving your money and opting for using your browser on your mobile phone (if you have one).
Another way of saving money on petrol is by using the dockets you receive from Coles, Safeway or Woolworths. These store chains have invested greatly in petrol operations and want to get their customers using their specialised stations, allowing for you to save up to 8cents per litre by holding onto your docket. Be sure to check the prices of the petrol station you use, as other wise you may save 8cents per litre but pay an inflated price regardless because you haven’t checked the area around you on MotorMouth.
What are they other ways to save money on petrol?
We would like to hear from you, I am sure there are other great ways to save money on petrol that we cannot even begin to imagine. What are your tips?
