Spring-Cleaning To Save You Money
Like everything in life- filing, appointment-keeping, car maintenance- mess will cost you money. If things are hard to find, or appliances aren’t clean, everything becomes instantaneously less efficient, costing you time, peace of mind and money. While it’s a unappealing to have to clean all the time, giving your house a good once-over scrub this springtime will save you money. Here’s how.Â
Fridge Coils
Something I really never thought I would end up doing- cleaning the dust of my fridge coils. You unplug the fridge, and pull it away from the wall. Find the coils (sometimes under a plate) and dust off all the debris. If things are really stuck, you might want to get some soap and water onto the ask, just make sure it’s completely dry before you reconnect it. Your fridge will work more efficiently, and save you the previously-wasted money.
Light Bulbs
I really can’t say I ever considered that light bulbs lasted long enough to be worthy of a clean, but it would make sense that dust on a light bulb would reduce their overall purpose, i.e. to produce light. To get them back to a place in the sun, give them a quick dust. If you have yet to convert to energy-efficient alternatives, now is the time to get rid of all the energy-sucking bulbs and get some friendly ones. The savings aren’t necessarily dramatic, but the cumulative effects will be noticeable.
Sliding Doors
If you have sliding doors in your house, ensure that the track they run on is clean. According to TURN, a website in the know on these issues, a dirty track could ruin your door seal, making your cool or warm air escape and causing draughts. Just like in the times of great Victorian literature, there is still nothing worse than a draught in a room.
Dishwasher
There really is nothing in this world better than vinegar, I am convinced of it. Get some vinegar and warm water, and clean out the racks and inside of your dishwasher. Then get a toothbrush and clean out the spinning arms and vents, making sure that it can spin unimpeded and there’s no stray silverware lurking down there. Once down, have a look at the seal. Keeping your dishwasher clean will not only ensure it lasts longer, but also save you money on your electricity bill.
An Airing
Toss all your clothes out of your cupboards and give away anything you don’t wear- the time you’ll save every morning when you get dressed is worth more than gold. If you want to save even more money, set up an eBay account and try and sell your clothes. Make sure you’ve got protection against moths and damp, as both could ruin your treasures. Air everything out- donnas, mattresses, rooms. It’ll be beneficial for your health and for the items themselves.
Landscaping
I think this suggestion is inspired. If you plan to plant some trees this spring, make sure that trees that lose their leaves are planted on the south and west sides of the house, so you’ll have shade in summer and solar heat in winter. Plant evergreens on the north and west to block the wind and save money on heating costs in the winter.
