Shopping Online: How To Do It Safely
A friend of mine told me recently how she had gone and bought a plane ticket with cash. She said it was the oddest experience, buying a plane ticket in the real world with real money. How many things have become that way? I can’t remember the last time I bought a concert ticket with money, or subscribed to something by filling out a form. Shopping online is now a necessary part of our lives, so here are some tips on how to do it without exposing yourself and your finances.
Choose Your Location
Instinct is a funny thing. You have no hard reasons for why something feels off, it just does. And in this scenario, you should let it be your guide. Just as you wouldn’t hand over money to someone who looks dodgy, you should enter your details in a site that doesn’t feel right. If something seems amiss, do some research. Google the site, or call the contact number. Be wary as well of clicking on ads. Though they’re usually hosted by legitimate companies, it’s worthwhile keeping a critical eye on everything you are entering personal information into.
Keep Your Computer Secure
I once worked for a lawyer who told me he didn’t believe in virus protection. I agree that, often, things like virus protection can be a bit of a con. But in the same way that insurance can be a bit of a con. I hate the idea of having to pay inflated costs for something that might never happen, but I accept that I am not willing to take the risk that it might. And when it comes to viruses, chances are fairly high that sooner or later, you’ll be hit, especially if you’re working on a PC. Save yourself the hassle, and possible cost, and keep your virus software up to date.
Check The Basics
There are a couple of clear indicators that a website is properly set up, and will encrypt any information that is sent. Does the website start with “https”? Can you see the SSL sign with the padlock? Legit websites should display both of these things. A quick check to see that they are present will save you heartache in the end.
Consider Credit
You know it pains me to say this, but credit cards do have an additional layer of protection to the run-of-the-mill debit. If your details get stolen, you won’t be left penniless, whereas, if your debit card is taken, it can leave you in a tight spot. It may even come with an insurance against fraudulent charges. Debit cards have reasonable protections as well, but if you’re concerned, you might consider charging to credit online. heartache in the end.
Check Your Statements
Checking your statements should probably be routine anyway, but is imperative when it comes to online financials security. If you see an unusual transaction, contact the bank immediately. They might not necessarily go for the huge amount straight up, so keeping an eye on where all your transactions are going can be a big help

Don’t believe all websites are safe. I did only deal with what I thought was safe, however somehow somebody gained access to my debit card details, fortunately I discovered it before too much damage was done, even though my account is in debt, the bank will refund the money and fees. I won’t be shopping on line any more it spooked me out, shop locally in town or within the region and with cash.
