Saving Money on University Text Books
If you are like most university students you are probably strapped for cash most of the time. So when you get hit with all the fees and textbook costs at the beginning of each semester you probably go into a slight panic about how you are going to afford them all.
Considering some textbooks can be anywhere around the $150 mark, when you multiply that by up to four subjects your probably looking at an outlay of a couple of hundred dollars.
There are ways to reduce this significantly which will add up to lots of savings over your time at uni.
Join the Co-op bookstore
It’s a once off nominal fee of $20 however every time you need to buy books you receive discounts, usually around 20-25%. It’s a life long membership which makes it extremely worthwhile joining up. Don’t forget that the co-op stores do not only sell textbooks but also fictional novels and other interesting books for your enjoyment!
Check out the notice boards
Every university is plastered with pamphlets and notices about a variety of things, most of which are ex-students wanting to sell their textbooks for cheap. It is worth trying to have a scour every now and then to see if you can find some of the books that you may need. Be aware though if you need a certain edition of the book. Whilst most of the time there is little difference, there may be something of vital importance that you need-make sure you check with your lecturer.
Try the library

Most universities and individual subjects are now connected online similar to a type of forum. Often at the beginning of semester past students will put their details up with the textbooks they have on offer so keep an eye out straight away. Also some students in other subjects may have already completed the one you’re doing so maybe put out a general post asking if anyone wants to sell their textbook.
E-bay
As most of you probably know you can buy almost anything on eBay. And there is a huge collection of books online for you to snatch up at almost ridiculous prices. Try searching for the titles you need and you can save some big bucks. Otherwise it is worth trying Amazon as they sometimes have sales and second hand books on offer.
Second Hand book stores
There might not be as many of these around as there used to be but they can be a gem to find second hand textbooks and also books for your own reading. I know I used to go to one in Randwick which was particularly helpful for finding second hand textbooks at cheaper prices. Try searching online for any stores that may be in your local area.
You would be surprised how much money you can actually save just by doing a little research and putting in a little effort. Whilst it may not seem a lot, over the span of your studies you can save hundreds of dollars. And don’t forget if your job is related to your degree you may be able to claim some of your textbook costs as tax deductions.
