Saving Money on Overseas Phone Calls with Skype

Forget your home or mobile phone service provider and even fidgety international calling cards that require you to punch in twenty numbers before you even get to dialing the number you want to reach. There’s a new way to save money on overseas phone calls and even connect with your loved ones face to face via video calling.

If you haven’t already downloaded and used Skype then you’re missing out on free Skype to Skype video calling and international calling rates that would put any telecommunications provider to shame.

3 mobile allows you to download Skype and make calls to other Skype users directly from your 3 mobile handset. If you’re an iPhone user, you can download the Skype application onto your device and start using the service.

What’s the catch?

The only catch is the person at the other end needs to use and log into their Skype account in order for you to get talking — so calls have to be coordinated but who’s unavailable via a simple text message and far from their laptops these days anyway?

Skype phones are also widely available and allow two people to stay logged in and always in touch — like an international walkie talkie. People who swear by the service have no complaints about the call quality, although if you’re using Skype from your computer, a good headset is key.

and view their calling rates, visit their website www.skype.com

A word of caution, Skype shouldn’t be a replacement for your regular telephone because if the person you’re trying to reach is not logged on and you have an emergency, you’re going to be in trouble.

Skype Fees?

With Skype, you can chose to pay a flat monthly fee for unlimited calls (although a fair usage policy applies), or pay as you go. The service is packed with other great features as well to help you stay in touch with your loved ones and share information.

Many companies and organisations are even turning to Skype to hold video conference calls and organise get-togethers.

The video calling service to other Skype users is free, all you need is a webcam. Skype also allows you to import your contact list from your work and personal email accounts.

And for those technologically backward friends and family who don’t use or plan to use Skype anytime soon: you can still call them on the phones and mobiles and enjoy Skype’s low calling rates.

I find that many of my family members are using Skype to save money on calls.

They are expats using Skype which means they use it as a source of contact for the family back home, even though they are based in South East Asia.

Any other expats using Skype out there? Does it save you much money?
