Saving Money on Cheap Self Storage

12 Jan 09 / Posted by: Alex

Storage is rapidly becoming a necessity for many Australian households. We find ourselves with the inability to buy a house that is large enough for our possessions that we hold, whether it is from over purchasing or from family furniture and items that you cannot bring yourself to throw out.

Sometimes it is best to clear out your excess items and avoid the cost of storage, as items that you have to store tend to be items you could technically live without, though if you are like me, some things are just too hard to part with, requiring somewhere to store them – this is where cheap self storage comes into play.

Self Storage the old way

In the past there were very few options for self storage, all of which were quite expensive and required large monthly payments and security fees.

Providers of self storage were people like Kennards Self Storage, Fortknox Self Storage in Melbourne and a large range of boutique storage providers all across Australia.

These providers become complacent with the costs of self storage and in turn are charging quite a substantial amount of money based upon the amount of space you require. This tends to be because they are located in prime areas that are close to the CBD or local areas you live in.

Self Storage the new way

Saving money on self storage is about to become a lot easier. The concept of private self storage is starting to appear, that of which everyday people can lease out their excess space to those looking for storage space.

An Australian first has taken this idea and made it into an easy to use website for Australians wishing to partake in such private storage, it is a company known as SpaceOut.

SpaceOut is a revolutionary new concept within the storage industry which gives power to the average person to either provide or rent reasonably priced, privately owned storage space. Private storage ’space’ may be an unused cupboard, a garage or shed, or part of a spare room in a house or office.

Space Owners

As a SpaceOwner you could be sitting on a goldmine. Do you have empty space in your home, business or organisation that could be used to store things for other people? Would you like to rent that space out and make extra income?

Space Seekers

Have you ever thought that self-storage was expensive? Would you like to be able to store your things closer to home, or in an area, suburb or even street of your choice? Would you like convenient and easy access and save money at the same time? Maybe you only need to store a few boxes and it seems unnecessary and costly to use a self-storage facility. SpaceOut has the solution!

What are your thoughts?

Share your thoughts on self storage and the best way to save money doing so. Maybe you disagree totally with the concept of needing storage, so please share with us!

What if the house burns down where I have stored my goods?
How do we agree to access the goods? What if the homeowner is on holidays? What if they sell the house whilst my goods are in their bedroom?

Hi Andrew,

I too had those questions. Although there are a few downsides like you mentioned, the concept of private self storage offers an affordable solution to Australian’s who might other wise not be able to engage in such storage methods.

I am assuming that the concept of access times and insurance would be something SpaceOut will need to look into, as it appears to be one of the few downsides to an otherwise great new idea.
