Save Money on Nappies and Baby Wipes

As most mothers know – its quite hard to save money on baby essentials such as nappies, wipes and food. The costs of such products are sky high but no one can do without them causing quite a catch 22.This article is designed to inform mother’s to be and mothers alike on the best ways to save money on nappies and wipes to cut down a significant burden on the family budget.

Saving Money on Nappies and Wipes

Here is my list of tips to save on nappies;

  1. If you use Huggies Baby Wipes – remember to rip them in half. Half of a wipe is much easier for you to manoeuvre on your bub and will also make them stretch twice as long!
  2. Use old towels and cut them up so that they are the sized of a small hand washer. This allows you to re-use and easily carry with you in a wet zip locked bag.
  3. Use face washers. Buy only blue or purple (or whatever colour you want thats unique) so you know that they are specifically used for cleaning up the bub’s bot.
  4. If your bub is not suceptable to nappy rash, try using the expensive huggies at night to ensure they stay dry and using the cheaper no frills brands during the day.
  5. If you use disposable nappies – buy in bulk when the sales are on, it really adds up to a huge saving come a month later.
  6. Use old fashioned nappies when at home and only use disposable when you get home.
  7. Buy seconds nappies from Toys’r'us that are in damaged boxes as they tend to be perfect inside.

Where to buy Discounted Nappies

Keep an eye out for specials at BIGW, Target, Toys’R'Us and Kmart – these tend to be the best places to buy cheap nappies and discounted 2nds.

Why use huggies at all? find a good generic brand and use it day and night – Aldi have fantastic nappies and are so much cheaper than huggies!

*Editors Note* Thanks for the comment AJ! Do you know how much cheaper the Aldi nappies are than the huggies? Is the quality just as good?

A traditional way to reduce your use of nappies and thus save money (heaps of money) is to practice EC. Elimination Communication is a way of reducing your nappy use just one nappy at a time. In time, you learn some simple skills of communicating with your little on and avoiding them having a pooey nappy first once, then more and more as you get in the ‘EC Grove’. In between ‘potty stops’ your baby wears a nappy. My baby is 20 weeks old at the moment, and he uses 1-2 disposables a day. We use modern cloth options as well as nappy-free time. We are a part time nappy free family, with two small boys and minimising our nappy dependence we have saved a heap of money – I worked out once with our first son we spent an average of $5 a month on nappying in his first couple of years.

I agree! Why use disposable nappies at all?
I’ve invested in some Eenees (www.eenees.com.au) pouch pants that I can use cloth nappies in. For $100 I bought four nappy pouches, and for another $100 I got 24 cloth/microfibre nappies that wash easily and dry very quickly.

They are easy to get off when bubs wants to go to the potty, and if she doesn’t get there in time I’ve only a cloth to pop in the soaker. Use a biodegradable and flushable nappy liner so solids can go in the loo where they belong if you are using standard nappy training, or if bub doesn’t make it in time :)

A few packets of cheap washcloths is also a great alternative to endless purchases of babywipes. Once used they can go into the nappy bucket to be rinsed off when the bucket is full.

Easy. for just over $200 I have more than a year or so supply of baby bum help :) All good!
