Revitalise your career, earn more, save more

Job-hunting. Like moving house, or pulling an all-nighter, job-hunting is a phrase to frighten me to the core. I hate it. I have probably invested more hours of my life in sending off resumes, tailoring cover letters and placing follow-up phone calls than I have spending quality time with my mother. So how can you reinvigorate your career hunt? Here are 5 tips, inspired by Cash Money Life.

Have more than one source of income

I actually find this to be a fantastic tip, mostly because I have more than one source of income. My main job is full-time, while my second job is freelance and fits around my usual hours. It is a very effective way of organizing your finances, when you have a major source of income that can be put into savings and debt repayment and a second job that provides living expenses. Think about ways you can structure your working life around a couple of different sources of income.

It also is a form of protection should the worst happen, and you lose your job. That way you have a second job to steer you through, until you find some more work. It can also mean that you can engage in different industries, and bring some variety into your life.

Be Prepared When Interviewing

How many times can I be told? Prepare, prepare, prepare. It’s no good to come into an interview and have to acknowledge that you haven’t looked at the website, or you’re not really sure what the company does. Know who the major players are, and what the latest news is for the company. Without a doubt, you should be able to tell your potential employer how your skills can improve their company.

Also be prepared with a couple of questions to ask them. Don’t do the stunned mullet look I’ve perfected over the course of many interviews. I like to finish each of my interviews muttering about having no questions. Surprisingly. I haven’t gotten many jobs that way.

Join LinkedIn

Hey, it can’t hurt. For those of you among us (and I’ve got my hand up as I type over here) that hate networking, why not take some of the pain out and do it online? There’s no need to do the awkward laughter at bad jokes, worry if your dress is appropriate or try to slow down on your drinking as the night wears on- it’s all very clean and virtual.

Look outside

Your career is important, but it’s not the be all and end all. If your job is running your life, think about reconfiguring it or finding a new one. It’s not worth the pain. Find work that fits with what you want from life- the right hours, the right approach and the right pay rate.

Do What You Love

This is not something we’re all privileged to do, but if you can find a job you enjoy, then stick to it. Nothing can beat a genuine interest in your work, and it’ll make you satisfied in all spheres of life. Know yourself, your strengths and weaknesses, and play to them when you’re searching for a career. It’s no good trying to work at a job you despise, you’ll end up convincing no one.
