How To Save Money Before 9am In The Morning

I love mornings. The period before 9am involves many of my favourite things- showers, breakfast, newspapers. But how can I turn this golden period into gold? Can we save money for ourselves before we walk out the door for another day of the daily grind? Damn straight you can. Here’s some ways to save the dimes, inspired by Frugillionaire.

It may seem like some of them are time-suckers. At a guesstimate, I reckon you could have all these measures in place by getting up half an hour to an hour earlier every day. Being a sloth in the morning, I’m already in the place where I get up early enough to have an hour long breakfast. Counterintuitive, to say the least.

Turn Off The Water

It’s a great tip in terms of the environment, but also a good money saving device. Don’t let the water run as you brush your teeth, and half (quarter, rip to shreds) the amount of time you spend in the shower in the morning. If your shower is thinking time, find somewhere else to think that doesn’t involve pouring money (and precious resources) down the drain.

Halve It

Halve the amount of soap, shampoo, conditioner, moisturizer, preserver, whatever you use as part of your morning ritual. Your hair isn’t cleaner because you use a litre of conditioner every time, and you’ll find yourself saving money and not having to do emergency Coles trips for soap every third day.

Apply Sunscreen

A no brainer, but easy to forget. How will it save you money? Well, if you can make it part of your morning ritual, you’ll save yourself lots of money on beauty products in the future (and maybe even money on having annoying cancers cut out of your nose).

Eat Breakfast At Home

Even the coffee. A plunger costs $10, so why not brew up some coffee before you head out? Just because you make breakfast at home doesn’t mean it has to be boring, buy nice muesli or bagels. You’ll be saving yourself about $10 a day, and will feel great because you’re probably eating healthier anyway.

Make Lunch, Plan For Dinner

Packing your lunch is the silver bullet of everyday finance tips. You’ll save a fortune if you can avoid buying that innocent looking sushi or afternoon kebab. You’ll save even more money if you can have a look in the fridge and plan what you’ll be eating for dinner. That way you can shop at lunch time and avoid the Evil Takeaway Temptation.

Take The Bus

Or car pool with work colleagues or friends who work in the same area. You’ll save tones of money on petrol and can have a much more social trip into work than the usual shouting-at-the-radio-and-cursing-all-Sydney-drivers chaos that you are likely to endure. It’s way better (as I know you all know) for the environment as well.

Go For A Run

This one might need a bit more time in the morning, but if you can fit it in, you won’t regret it. The money saving effects aren’t readily apparent, but consider this- if you can go for a brisk walk or run in the morning, you’ll be more productive and get through your work faster. You’ll be more awake, and save yourself buying a million coffees and wasting money, and you’ll be happier at work, which is worth it’s weight in gold.
