Cheap Dates That Don’t Make You Look Cheap
Dating. A ruthless world of misinformation, crushed egos and over-extended wallets, all in search of the person who means you can leave the dating world forever. Don’t let people tell you different, it’s brutal. But having said all that, it doesn’t necessarily have to be expensive.
Great dates are those elusive things, where the stars align and the activity of the day is something you both enjoy. That doesn’t have to be an expensive meal, or a yacht cruise. Here are some ideas for your next foray into battle.
Art School
If you’re heading off for a date at about this time of year, check out your local art school. Chances are they’ll be exhibiting their students’ work. You’ll get cultured and get to feel like you’re part of the up-and-coming generation, and it’s all for free.
Walk It Out
Personally, I think a walk is a great idea for a date, provided both people are forewarned and no one is wearing heels. Contact your local council to get a walking map that includes local attractions. Pack a picnic, and get to know each other and your town in the meantime.
Dress It Up
If your date isn’t too high-maintenance, then you could volunteer yourselves at a hairdressing school. This isn’t one I’d advise as a first date prospect, and you might want to think about doing a trial run first, but it’s fun and different and entirely free.
Amateur
Amateur theatre can be truly dreadful. The same goes with open-mic nights or amateur poetry gatherings, and it’s all part of the appeal. Find out what local nights are on, and pull up a pew. It doesn’t matter whether it’s good or bad, it’s always great to see people having a go. They’re making themselves vulnerable onstage, and you’re on a date, so there are a lot of similarities.
Stargaze
Bug spray, comfortable doonas and potentially some champagne, and you have yourself a perfect date in your backyard. Get an astronomy book out at your local library and work out what some of the constellations are. Not advisable for mid-winter.
Movie Night
Challenge each other to bring a film to a themed movie night. Worst movie ever made, or best classic movie. It’s light-hearted, and neatly avoids the potential for an argument over whether Bruce Willis or Reece Witherspoon make better films.
Park Out
Find out where the best local play equipment is, and hang out there for the date. Bring some nice food and eat it at the top of the slide. Whether or not the date is a success, it’ll be an cute story at the pub the next week
Farmer’s Markets
Check out your local grower’s markets. Spend the day wandering around the markets, discussing what you’d like to eat. You can buy delicious food straight from the producer, and then head home and cook up a meal for your date.
Something’s Brewing
Tour a local brewery or winery. You’re likely to be able to do it for free, or heavily discounted, and get to have a drink or two in a relaxing setting. And you look original, which is always a good thing.
