Can You Think Yourself Rich?
The power of the mind. Not something we’re all inclined to give much credence to when it comes to our finances. Yet Chellie Campbell reckons a bit of the ol’ affirmations can have a positive effect on your finances. Drawn from an article by Angela Self at the Globe and Mail, here are a couple of tips.
The Power Of The Word
Self reports that we are estimated to have 60, 000 thoughts a day, 80% of which are negative. 45,000 negative thoughts a day. We’re a remarkably amiable bunch considering that level of down-at-heel thought process. How many of them are about money? While there are many causes for discontent in our lives, money is certainly a major player in stress and frustration. So what can change if we change our thought processes from the negative to the positive?
Affirm Thyself
“People love to give me money”. “I am rich and wonderful”. “Money comes to me easily and effortlessly”. According to Campbell, repeating these statements make them come true, irregardless of whether or not you believe them. I find it a bit of a stretch (apparently it’ll start happening in 21 days so I’ll keep you posted). What I find easier to support is the idea of rewriting your thoughts about money. Instead of thinking that you never have enough, affirm the opposite. “I earn a good wage, have a high standard of living and am financially secure”. After all, in the big picture, it’s the truth.
Think Forward
By focusing on the future as opposed to stressing about the present, you’re likely to be able to cope with financial hiccups and long-term planning much more easily. Affirming your financial goals daily help as a reminder throughout the day of why you are cutting out luxuries, or avoiding the cup of coffee from the local café at lunchtime. It’ll also help you gain some perspective on your current situation. Yes, things might be difficult now but they are worthwhile and part of the path to financial security.
Once You Notice It
Another advocate of the Think Positive School, Cathy Brennan, suggests this idea. Have you ever noticed how something will come up in conversation- a book, a song, a person- and all of a sudden you notice it every where? It’s like it didn’t exist before you noticed it, and now you can’t escape it. Positive thinking does a similar thing- if you can concentrate on your good fortune, you’ll begin to see it everywhere.
An Opportunity To Act
By using affirmation- written or spoken- you’ll solidify what goals are important to you in your own mind. With that kind of improved clarity about your financial future, you’ll find making decisions and actions easier, and that you will recognize opportunities when they appear. If you’re living in a negative world, you’re likely to miss chances that come your way or feel too stressed to take advantage of them. Write down three financial goals, three financial achievements and what you hope for as your financial future. If you can affirm on a daily basis what matters to you financially, and what achievements you are proud of in your financial life, you might find that you have- in a way- thought yourself rich. I’ll update in 21 days on my success with my own affirmations.
