A Financial Resolution For Every Month – Step By Step

12 Jan 11 / Posted by: Francesca Sidoti

As a stare into my crystal ball (conveniently pocket-sized for work travel and sporting a lovely polka dot base), I see a lot of resolutions coming our way for 2011. Whether our money fortunes will improve or go the dogs is, as yet, unclear. All the ball tells me is that if we stick to the following resolutions, we may just end our year on a financial high.

No news so far on the chances of me meeting someone tall, dark and handsome or on whether or not the Wallabies have any chance in the World Cup.

January

Resolve to stay realistic and appropriate. This is the month of denial, of fresh starts, of overestimated discipline. Fortune smiles upon those with realistic budgets that can be maintained.

February

The month of the Valentine, this month will bring a resolve of perseverance. Put aside a minimum $50 a week. If you can afford to save more than that, congratulations. The important resolution is to stay consistent in your savings, at whatever level you can afford.

March

Autumn brings with it a slowing-down. Resolve to decrease your entertainment spending by 20%. That could be one day a week that you stay in as opposed to painting the town. Put the money towards your credit card repayments.

April

Commemorate a month of falling leaves with a credit-free existence. Resolve to use cash only for the month of April, and many good financial things will come your way. You may find yourself sleeping better at night as well.

May

May day, a day synonymous with Labour Day. This month, your fortunes will improve should you assess your working life. Are you being paid an adequate amount? Are you working too many hours? Resolve to evaluate and improve your nine to five.

June

And now winter. Buttoning down the hatches and stoking the home fires. Resolve to renew your budget in light of the quieter months now ahead. If there are any further cuts that can be made, include them in your budget.

July

A cold month, resolve this is the time to get on top of your debt. While repaying weekly throughout the year, what better use for that tax return than to rid yourself of plastic forever? Your fortunes will improve beyond measure should this step be taken.

August

August brings with it a resolve to consolidate in the face of spring. Mortgages, credit card debts, loans- all should be evaluated and if improvements can be made, now is the time. Can any of your debts be rolled into an account with lower interest? Time to do it.

September

Resolve to spring clean. Sell anything you no longer need. Spring clean your utilities, and cut down on any extraneous spending. Cancel all monthly services you don’t use. Fortune favours the streamlined.

October

Resolve to be broad-thinking. Now, as the weather warms, think about your life insurance, superannuation and retirement plans. Should anything need to be updated, the moons in October will support you.

November

As the year winds to it’s close, resolve to financially detox throughout November, The months ahead may prove expensive, so prepare and plan with some discipline in the last month of Spring. Write down all expenditure, then decrease it.

December

The moons of fortune become frivolous in December, Resolve to maintain what you have sustained throughout the year. Stick to your budgets, avoid unthinking expenditure and enjoy a year of fruitful resolve.
