5 Ways To Save Money This Summer

I love summer. Almost everything about it is awesome. I also find it’s a much cheaper season that winter. For instance, you don’t crave huge, Bavarian-esque feasts, you just feel like something light.

You don’t need to eat your weight in chocolate, because everyone is in a good mood.

Summer is what we do best, so here are a couple of ways to do it cheaply as well.

Know thy clothes

I’m a sucker for a summer dress. I admit it, I have no control when it comes to those pretty floral patterns, those cute little skirts. And then I curse myself for the remaining three months because I wear a sarong and a singlet, with cossies underneath. So I have a plan to know myself this summer, and save money on clothes. I don’t need any. This isn’t winter- I don’t need ten jumpers to feel warm. Before summer begins this year, buy yourself some swimmers if absolutely necessary. Don’t buy them just because last year’s trend is so out. Buy yourself a hat, thongs, some shorts and a singlet. It’s probably all you’re going to wear anyway, so set aside the money you usually spend on your wardrobe for a more important cause.

And while you’re at it, if you see a fantastic winter jacket massively discounted in the off-season and you know you need it for next year, be smart. Buy in the off-season, and save yourself a fortune.

Get fit

If I were being kind to myself, I’d describe my skin tone as glow in the dark. Summer is the time to love the body you’re in. Forget the car, get some spring in your step and walk to work. Go for evening strolls, and appreciate the cooling down day. How will it save you money? It saves you on petrol, on gym membership and on buying stupid SlimFast or other equally expensive products, in an attempt to get a summer body back in a two-week period.

Entertain yourself

We all get pretty cheery in summer, even event organizers. There are tones of free or cheap things to do. If you’re starting to get sick of the cosy dinner parties and rain-drenched movie nights, then summer is going to be the best thing around. With daylight savings, have a twilight dinner down near the beach. Or a weekend BBQ. Or check out the great Council events that are running throughout the warmer months.

Turn it off

I live in a cold climate, so have been pumping heating all winter. But this summer, save your bank balance, and turn off the AC. Open all the windows and get a breeze going- you’ll save a fortune and it’s better for the environment and your health as well.

Dry it out

In a similar vein, don’t waste money on a dryer. It sucks electricity like a vampire, and the sun is an equally effective way of drying your clothes at zero cost. It’s been raining like no one’s business all winter, but this summer, get into the Hills hoist. It’s an iconic Australian experience anyway. Hang out your washing, while holding a stubbie and listening to Cold Chisel and you’ve got the perfect summer, right there in your backyard.
